(676.3) ^59:2.12 Había muchas variedades de animales de concha, pero sus conchas no les hacían tanta falta a la sazón para fines defensivos como en las edades subsiguientes. Había gastrópodos en las aguas de los mares antiguos, y comprendían los caracoles marinos perforadores de concha simple [urosalpinx cinerea], los bígaros [littorina littórea] y los caracoles de mar comunes. Los gastrópodos bivalvos os han llegado a través de los millones de años intermedios en forma muy parecida a como existían en aquel entonces y comprenden los mejillones, almejas, ostras y veneras o vieiras. También se desarrollaron los organismos de concha de valva, y estos braquiópodos vivían en aquellos aguas antiguas en forma muy similar a como hoy en día existen; incluso sus valvas tenían dispositivos protectores engoznados, mellados y de otras suertes.

The gastropods were present in the waters of the ancient seas, and they included single-shelled drills, periwinkles, and snails. The bivalve gastropods have come on down through the intervening millions of years much as they then existed and embrace the mussels, clams, oysters, and scallops. The valve-shelled organisms also evolved, and these brachiopods lived in those ancient waters much as they exist today; they even had hinged, notched, and other sorts of protective arrangements of their valves.
